Description
A hurricane is blowing off the coast. Huge waves are bashing the pier, but by the time the wave reaches the beach, the resistance of the pier causes the surf to wash calmly over the sand. The pier becomes a symbol of protection as the understructure forms a shelter overhead. Further meaning is seen in the response of the adults. Those on the pier are unaware that the boy might need help. They ignore him, but a woman bends to listen as the boy explains what he needs. There could be many applications of this metaphor.
